program notes

This is an instrumental version of Canticles for Jerusalem (1983), a song cycle for soprano and piano, with the order of the movements changed. It was Fine next-to-last composition. In the instrumental version Jerusalem becomes the afterworld, and Fine’s orchestration transforms the music into an extraordinary sound portrait of “the other side of the river.”
